How to Run Effective Design Critiques

A well-run critique strengthens work and builds team alignment when it focuses on goals, problems, and actionable next steps.

Design critiques can either elevate work or deflate morale. The difference is structure. A strong critique creates a safe space for honest feedback while keeping the conversation tied to user goals, business constraints, and design principles.

Set the Stage with Context

Before showing work, the presenter should share the problem, audience, constraints, and the type of feedback needed. This prevents reviewers from solving the wrong problem or offering opinions based on incomplete information. A clear framing statement keeps the session focused.

Focus on Problems, Not Preferences

Ask reviewers to describe what they observe and why it might fail, rather than offering prescriptive solutions. Feedback like "this button feels hard to find" is more useful than "make it blue." The best critiques name risks and trade-offs so the designer can decide the right path forward.

Document Actionable Feedback

End each critique with a written summary of decisions and next steps. Without documentation, good insights disappear. Assign owners and deadlines where needed, and schedule a follow-up if the work requires another round of review.

Effective critiques are a team habit. With consistent framing, respectful language, and clear outcomes, they become one of the highest-leverage tools in the design process.
